The society's goals as established in 2003 are that the society:
Collects, stores, and makes available historical information about Houghton, Island, and Owhiro bays at the Island Bay Community Centre.
Publishes Southern Bays annually, a newsletter quarterly, and other publications and maintains a Facebook page and a website
Holds quarterly meetings with a guest speaker at the Baptist church, 284 The Parade. On a Monday in February and the third Monday of May, August, and November at 7:30 pm.
Keeps a watching brief on historical issues in the Southern Bays.
