2020: Solidarity with Muslim New Zealanders in the Southern Bays

On 15 March, a self-proclaimed ‘white nationalist’ from Australia opened fire on worshippers at Christchurch mosques in Deans Ave and Linwood, killing 51 people and wounding 49. 

As part of a national response, many Southern Bays people paid their respects at the Kilbirnie mosque and donated to help the victims. Around Island Bay signs were posted indicating the community’s revulsion at the crimes and solidarity with Muslim New Zealanders
