St Dominic's School for the Deaf, a Catholic school for deaf children, was initially located in Dover Street, Island Bay, Wellington, before moving to Feilding in 1953. The school, established in 1944, was run by Dominican Sisters and provided a Catholic education with a focus on oral communication.
The first Catholic school to be established in New Zealand for the education of deaf mutes at Dover Street, Island Bay, will be opened tomorrow afternoon by Archbishop O'Shea, This school is to be conducted by the Dominican Sisters, and represents a further step in Catholic education in the Dominion. Since the middle of last century the Dominican Sisters have been made the education of deaf and dumb children a feature of their work, and at present have schools devoted to this object in America, Ireland, South Africia and Australia.
